Gastronomy and Tradition
Firmly on land: a taste of the sea
Portugal is located right next to the Atlantic Ocean. So there’s no surprise to see that Portugal’s cuisine is strongly influenced by sea flavour: fish and seafood dishes are a must. The rich fishing coast provides different fishes to be cook in an almost infinite variety of ways.
The most famous dishes are: seafood rice and fresh grilled fishes.
Of course it helps to have a good olive oil to go with the grilled fish, and Portugal has one of the best in Europe, many times recognized with International prizes.
A gastronomy firmly based on tradition
Portugal’s fair weather, fertile lands and supplies of fresh water were always precious, since antiquity.
The Romans were here, in big numbers. Since the VIII century the land was occupied by the Moors, who brought several irrigation techniques which persist until today.
When Portugal began to expand, into Africa, Asia and America, discovering new lands, a lot of new tools arrived to spice up, and smooth our culinary abilities. Namely sugar from Brasil. For centuries, Portugal’s cuisine is been brewing old and new elements, and remains to this day one of the more complex and rich cuisines of Europe.
